Thinking About Getting/Giving a New Dog? Read This First

To the right is Angel -- she was recently adopted through Atlanta Pet Rescue & Adoption, one of my local rescue agencies.

This time of year, many will consider bringing a new dog into their home. The purpose of this post is to urge prospective dog owners to research the store and/or breeder their new pet is coming from. It is important to make sure that puppy mills are not the source of these dogs. Rescue agencies and shelters are a much better option, as there are so many orphaned dogs that need homes.

I would like to bring your attention to this video by the Humane Society (Unfortunately, I can't embed it in this post, but please take a look.)

It brings to light an 8 month investigation of the popular pet store Petland. It seems that the puppies they sell come mostly from puppy mills.

The more stores like this that are supported, the longer puppy mills can and will stay in business.

So, when buying your new puppy please do some research, and boycott anyplace that uses a puppy mill as a source. Look up a shelter in your area -- there are many more dogs like Angel that need a home.

I love that you posted this! I am a huge advocate of rescuing. my dog came from the humane society and she's the best investment eveah! I think we could shut down those awful puppy mills if everyone would just adopt from shelters. There's always treasures waiting to be found behind those cold gray bars.

I wonder why so many people seem to know this and do buy dogs and cats from the pet stores anyway. With so many shelters out there to adopt from, where the cost is less I don't get it, accept for the Razzle Dazzle aspect of getting a pure breed. But you can find shelters with pure breeds too. Heck WitsBitch's blogger got Maxx who is a persian as an adoptee.

Thank you so much for posting such an important message. If only people would just get their pets from responsible breeders and nobody else was allowed to breed dogs. This is a subject dear to my heart - you know why - and it's good to know that there are so many good people who feel just as I do.

Puppy mills and abuse to dogs and animals makes me furious.

More so than abuse to humans.

Dogs are innocent.

If I ever ran across a puppy mill i'd probably get myself arrested.

Great post - here too, there are so many problems, particularly at this time of year...
Christmas presents that are oh so sweet when small, fluffy and undemanding that grow to become rather more demanding and that need walking, feeding etc - people then abandon them..!
I picked one such dog up at the Society for the Protection of Animals and he was such a sad and withdrawn soul - he soon became the life and soul of our home before sadly being run over by a truck (that did not stop at a red light)...our next dog will definately be from a home as those animals need so much loving...
Jessica, thanks for posting this, it's so important that people are made aware of what really goes on behind the scenes..:)

I agree with you at the strategic level. At the micro level, however, this practice consigns the puppies NOT in shelters--however they got there--to eventual death. So while I totally understand that it may encourage puppy milling, buying a dog from a pet store is morally justifiable, especially when you look into the eyes of a dog who got there through no fault of his or her own.

Woof.

Isn't Angel adorable?! I totally understand what you mean by buying animals from the shelter. I hope to do so someday. But y'kno --- here in Aus when I see the little pups (and other animals for that matter) glassed in in pet stores, I'm tempted to buy them even if it is to set them free!

Fortune,
Treasures indeed! :)I so love my rescued mutt!

Lauren,
The same question always crosses my mind. :(

FF,
I always love it when I do these posts...it's so great to hear feed back from people who feel the same way as me about this. :)

Mike,
You're right--Dogs are innocent--all they want is love.

India,
Kudos to you for the rescue. I'm so sorry about your loss. I'm glad your rescued pup got to spend time with you and your family.

David,
You have a really good point, and I agree with you. I just wish all of the pet store dogs could be transferred to rescue agencies, and then the stores could be shut down. That way the puppy mills would have no business.

Oh, Hemu,
That's to bad. :(

Psych,
Thanks for stopping by. Yes, I do the same thing...if I had the money to buy all of them...I so would! :)
