Merriam-Webster 's Word of the Year, 2008

This always interests me--every year Merriam-Webster has a vote for their word of the year.

Here are the results from 2008.

1. bailout (noun)
a rescue from financial distress

And the runner ups
  1. vet
  2. socialism
  3. maverick
  4. bipartisan
  5. trepidation
  6. precipice
  7. rogue
  8. misogyny
  9. turmoil

If you like this post, read the one here, too!

I don't get it. How do they chose? I mean is there a certain criteria to get voted word of the year?
I like trepidation way better than bailout ;)

If they chose based on which words were the most overused in 2008, I agree. I fully expect "stimulus" to be the Word of 2009.

Malcolm,
Yeah, I bet you'd win a bet with that one! :)
